profits to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

When I was 12 and my sister was 9, our family’s life changed forever. My sister was diagnosed with childhood diabetes.

From my perspective, I’ve watched a little girl blossom into a beautiful, responsible young lady.

From her perspective, she became thankful it “happened” to her, rather than someone else who wouldn’t be responsible about dealing with the disease.

She didn’t just fall into this mindset. It took time. And it took seeing another family member struggle through childhood diabetes.

Our uncle has struggled with it since he was 5. Last week he was admitted into hospice.

Now I don’t know or understand what medical technology was like when he grew up, but I do know that his health has been quite terrible for years.

In fact, in 25 years, I don’t have a “healthy” memory of him.

My sister used that as fuel to not be careless about having diabetes.

She also learned a lot from Denver’s Barbara Davis Center. Her doctors and nurses are amazing. She’s doing wonderful thanks to her faithful BDC appointments several times a year.

Flash forward to two weeks ago. My heart broke to hear my client’s two year old boy was diagnosed with childhood diabetes.

I can’t imagine explaining the “whys” of diabetes to a two year old. My wish if for this little boy to realize there is hope.

He has a long road ahead. He has to check his sugar several times a day, and follow it up with an insulin shot.

His parents will learn about the different types of insulin, how to mix the types, and how to give a shot that “doesn’t hurt.”

He can’t wear an insulin pump until he gets older. Once he reaches that age, it will cost several thousand dollars to get one.

Each month, diabetics will go through over $200 in supplies. Sometimes WELL over that. The financial burdens are only the tip of the iceberg.

This little guy and his parents need more emotional support than they can imagine.

So, for the month of February I will donate 10 percent of HL Concepts’ portrait profit to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

So if you want to make a difference, you can show your support to the Barbara Davis Center or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation:

If you don’t need your portraits taken, please help this worthy cause anyways!
